Steve Lai

Senior Producer & News Anchor, CNA

Steve Lai is a News Anchor at CNA, a Singapore-based regional broadcaster. Steve co-hosts the channel's two 1-hour flagship nightly bulletins, Asia Tonight at 8pm and Singapore Tonight at 10pm. He is also the Producer and Host of CNA's podcast Good List/Bad List with Steve Lai.

In his 7+ years at CNA, Steve has worked on every bulletin and shift on the 24hr news channel, and is the regular first choice for the channel's special broadcasts, which includes the two Trump-Kim Summits and the 2018 Malaysia Elections which saw Dr Mahathir Mohamad sweep back to power. For the Trump-Kim Summit in Singapore on 12 June 2018, he was on-air for almost 12 hours which was a personal record.

Prior to joining CNA in March 2012, Steve worked at ESPN Star Sports as an Anchor for Sportscenter Asia and as a Broadcast Journalist for the 24hr channel ESPNews.

Steve was the former (and first) Captain of the Brunei National Rugby team and worked as a pundit for Astro’s (Malaysia) coverage of the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Francis Sollano

Executive Director, Youth for a Livable Cebu

PHILIPPINES

Francis Sollano is an internationally-acclaimed, multi-disciplinary creative focused on social practice art. He pioneered “trashion” in the Philippines, and is known for his contemporary takes on upcycling garbage into wearable art, installations, and commercial products.

Francis is also the Executive Director of Youth for a Livable Cebu (YLC), a platform to promote sustainability advocacies and nation-building. With his vision, YLC received the Bayanihan sa Daan Award at the Malacañang Palace from the Office of the Philippine President in 2014, and received the award as one of the most Accomplished Youth Organizations of the Philippines in 2017 for their programs on developing youth potentials all over the country.

Up to this day, Francis is the only Filipino recognized by World Economic Forum as a Cultural Leader. In 2015, he received the Elevate Award from the British Council for using his creativity on the protection of children through play and safe spaces. He is also the recipient of the United Nations Environmental Program Fellowship Award as one of Asia Pacific's leaders on sustainable urban design. Last November 2018, Francis received the Arts4Good Award by the Singapore International Foundation for his dedication on empowering the youth through the arts.

Edika Amin

Edika Amin is an Analyst at PS-Engage where he provides engagement, research and analytical support for clients in the tech industry. Separately, Edika also works with the nation’s provident fund where he serves as a behavioral insights analyst.

Mohammad Yazdi Yahya

Mohammad Yazdi Yahya started as a Public Relations Officer by the Public Works Department, Ministry of Development in 2008. He then moved on to Brunei Shell as an Employee Relations Advisor in 2010. Within 18 months, Yazdi was promoted to HR Business Partner for Logistics (Aviation, Marine and Land Operations) and IT (Infrastructure, Networks and Business Applications) managing a portfolio of more than 700 employees.

The next chapter of Yazdi’s career was with Brunei Gas Carriers (BGC) where he assumed the role as the Head of Employee Relations and Services in 2012. He remained at BGC until 2020, occupying key roles including Head of Learning and Recruitment and Head of Talent Management.

Zaahidah Haji Iskandar, also known as Zee, is currently a Project Engineer of Integrated Facilities working at CIC Environmental Services and has been involved in the development of CIC’s new waste management facility. She started out as a Planner for CIC back in 2018, and in less than a year, she has been entrusted to research on new technologies and equipment, communicate and liaise with potential vendors, suggest fresh, new ideas and images for the new facility, while still assisting in operations.

Zee started working for CIC a year after she graduated from University of Leeds, UK, where she studied Geological Sciences for three years. Her background knowledge in petroleum has assisted her in her job role in the oil and gas industry. She has grown to learn so much about engineering while working for CIC and is still in the learning process now. Apart from operations and projects, she has also participated in the Management Trainee Program (MTP) where she gained various working skills and knowledge in Project Management.

She started out as a Planner for CIC back in 2018, and in less than a year, she has been entrusted to research on new technologies and equipment, communicate and liaise with potential vendors, suggest fresh, new ideas and images for the new facility, while still assisting in operations.

Zee started working for CIC a year after she graduated from University of Leeds, UK, where she studied Geological Sciences for three years. Her background knowledge in petroleum has assisted her in her job role in the oil and gas industry. She has grown to learn so much about engineering while working for CIC and is still in the learning process now. Apart from operations and projects, she has also participated in the Management Trainee Program (MTP) where she gained various working skills and knowledge in Project Management.

Andrew Lo

Ustaz Awang Mohd Khairul Nazif Bin Haji Awang Damit is active in the field of da'wah with a certified license from the Brunei Islamic Religious Council. Among his achievements is performing the Tazkirah at the Isra 'Mi'raj Celebration in 2017 in the presence of His Majesty the Sultan.

His involvement with civic engagement includes being the head of DINAMIKA, a group that focuses on community outreach activities in Brunei. He is also the co-founder of MUFEED, a group that focuses on helping unfortunate people, such as victims of disasters or fire.

As an academic, he hopes to be one of the country's scholars and produce other local scholars. As a Brunei native, he hopes to be able to contribute to Brunei Darussalam in achieving the vision of 2035.

He holds a Master in Islamic Studies from the University of Melbourne and a Bachelor of Usuluddin from the Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA).

Masrhiem Taufik

Masrhiem Taufik is the CEO and Founder of Esca Marine & Engineering Sdn Bhd. It is an oil and gas company that he set up during the Bruneianisation movement by the Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry back in 2012. He started with just a handful of employees, but has now expanded to become a company with 68 employees, just within 6 years — 88% of which are local Bruneians. He has been very active in the youth development scene where he helped found and set up the Youth Development Support Group (2005) and Korperasi Belia Kitani (2007), in which he supports various projects under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. In 2006, he was sent to attend the UNESCO World Youth Conference in Paris,  where he wrote a report to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports on implementing the ‘National Service’. He owns and founded five other companies and co-found a lifestyle magazine in Sabah called Breeze Magazine. 

With a passion for his country and the youth, his mission is to develop more meaningful businesses in Brunei that bring value to the country and in particular, the youth. He is currently exploring opportunities to export oil and gas technologies to other countries and tourism within Brunei, along with Aquaponics as a business venture.

Dr. Chang Yau Hoon

Dr. Chang Yau Hoon is the Director of the Centre for Advanced Research and Associate Professor at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). Prior to this appointment, he was Assistant Professor of Asian Studies and Sing Lun Fellow at the School of Social Sciences, Singapore Management University (SMU).

CY is a specialist on identity politics, religion and multiculturalism in contemporary Southeast Asia. His critically acclaimed book, Chinese Identity in Post-Suharto Indonesia: Culture, Media and Politics, was translated into Chinese and Indonesian.

He has delivered keynote speeches and presentations in more than 80 international conferences, workshops and seminars. In 2017, CY was a Visiting Fellow at Yusof Ishak Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore, and at Fudan University in Shanghai.

CY secured a Ph.D. (with Distinction) from the University of Western Australia

Stephen Chin

Stephen Chin is the Founder of The Dream Project,  an initiative that aims to inspire the hopes and dreams of local youth through motivational talks and projects. Trained as an Electrical and Electronics Engineer, Stephen’s experience include being a Project Engineer and Manager.

Since then, Stephen has been a regular speaker at St. Andrew’s School in Bandar Seri Begawan, and also assists in counseling the students there. He has also conducted talks, workshops and trainings in West and East Malaysia, Singapore Indonesia and Philippines.

Dr Alex Fischer

Dr Alex Fischer is Founding Member and Dean of Mahakarya Institute of Arts Asia, the first film school in Brunei Darussalam. He has held academic posts in Australia, Scotland and Malaysia. He has published on a range of topics including film festival functionality, digital content disruptions and disruptors, the connection between cinematic language and foreign policy with reference to the Qajar Dynasty in the early 1900s, and the perception of age in adolescent filmmakers’ films. His monograph, Sustainable Projections: Concepts in Film Festival Management, was published by St Andrews Press in 2013.

Dr Fischer’s current research subjects include the economics of film studios in South East Asia, alternative

distribution entertainment platforms, screen-based content creation  methodologies exhibited in geographic areas with non-extant film industries and the cinematic applications of intra-personal visual memories upon future forms of screen-based entertainment.

Muhammad Daud aka Jungle Dave

Like most young kids, Muhammad Daud was was afraid of  wildlife. Either he will run away or cry even if he sees a cat, rooster, dragonflies, buffalo or bird.

At the age of eight, he started confronting his fear toward wildlife by observing from a distance, and grew his passion by the day. Today, he is a self-thought naturalist and environmentalist, and won his accolade as Jungle Dave from people around the world. 

Jungle Dave’s adventure in the natural habitat of Borneo has been featured in NatGeo, Discovery Channel, and even in comic books. Today, Jungle Dave conducts wildlife tourism and awareness talks in primaries schools, high schools, colleges, and universities.

Queenie Chong

It is a holistic digital platform that provides affordable and accessible legacy planning services. She was instrumental in shaping energy transition across Brunei Shell Joint Ventures, and currently leads a flagship solar project for BSP.

Shirley is passionate about giving back to society. In 2018, her pitch on connecting purpose driven business across Borneo won her the Start-Up Weekend award. Shirley is a Co-Founder of React Co, a platform to build a community of entrepreneurs that place purpose before profit, and provide consumers with an avenue to buy sustainably.

She was a Brunei Shell scholar and formally joined the company in 2005. Shirley has worked in Brunei and in The Netherlands.

Amy was one of Lyfe Media’s 33 Brunei Women Under 33 in 2017 and is the first Bruneian shortlisted for the Women of the Future Awards South East Asia 2018. She is also a YSEALI Women’s Leadership Academy Alumni (2018).

A former national swimmer, Amy has always enjoyed facing a challenge. She credits her intensive swimming and athletics training for her determination, discipline and ‘never-give-up’ attitude. She has also starred in a number of local TV sitcoms and drama series and continues to teach, perform and compete until today.

Mardi Hedus

Founder, Relentless Academy of Performing Arts

Mardi Hedus is the Founder of Relentless Entertainment and Relentless Academy of Performing Arts and the company’s Creative Director. He starred in his first school production when he was 7 years old, which ignited his love for performing. At age 11, he was accepted into the Plymouth Theater Royal Young Company where he developed his talents in theatre acting and stage management. He left home at 15 when he was chosen out of thousands to be a member of a touring band that performed around the U.K. and Europe.

Mardi was one of the youngest teachers at the famous Pineapple Performing Arts School, teaching dance at Pineapple Studios in London. While at Pineapple, he also assisted with the Met Police program teaching dance and acting to teenagers and young adults. Some of his other work credits include work done for the BBC, ITV and Nickelodeon.

Since returning to Brunei, Mardi has devoted his time and resources into helping young Bruneians achieve their potential in the Arts. He firmly believes that no challenge is too hard to overcome and that if one puts their minds to it, they can achieve anything.

Shinny Chia

Co-Founder, The Collective Art Events

After living in Australia for 10 years, Shinny Chia went back to Brunei inspired and passionate to make a change. In 2014, she co-founded The Collective Arts Events, which is a pioneer in Brunei for creating platform events and projects that bring awareness to numerous social issues within Brunei. The Collective gives particular focus on gender equality, animal rights, environmentalism and freedom of speech. It is part of a 23-country wide Global Alliance dedicated to creating positive social change in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.

Shinny has also co-founded the Community for Brunei, which is designed to support Brunei’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs) at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic by digitising businesses, especially those run by poverty-stricken families, to build stable incomes and provide employment in the network supply chain.

She is the recipient of the 2018 RiceBowl Awards’ Founder of the Year.

Aspadiyah Mohd Sah

Aspadiyah Mohd Sah is a chirpy educator and trainer who pursued her dream to be an English teacher by majoring in English Language Teaching. She is now an English Language and Literature teacher at a local private tuition school since 2010. To do more to help her community, she explored counseling for a year at a number of private institutions before deciding to do her Master's degree in counseling.

With an academic background in teaching and counseling, she felt she could do more to help her community through SCOT Education, and has served as its Former Director. The first project she led was SCOT Education Project 2013. She is the English Course Coordinator throughout the course of the programme is run.

She is also the Programme Coordinator of a an NGO in Cambodia, Organisation for Building Community Resources (OBCR), where she assisted the local volunteer teachers in their teaching and training, in designing the curriculum for the English Training Project Centre (ETPC), and has become a part time teacher at the organisation.

Chef Luke Macann
